 Hayashibara manufactures the only Japanese interferon-IFN-α. It has been approved by the Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare for the treatment of hepatitis B & C, renal cell carcinoma, and chronic myelogenous leukemia. Hayashibara IFN-α is unique in that it is produced from a human cell line, which results in a "natural" human type IFN-α containing multiple subspecies. Comparisons with other IFN-α products suggests that Hayashibara IFN-α has increased clinical efficacy, few side effects which are also less severe, and results in a much lower incidence of anti-IFN-α antibody production by the patient.
